Project Overview:
My Role: Mechanical Design Engineer | Product Development Lead
The client approached with a concept to develop a handheld motorized tatter machine. I handled the complete product development, including mechanism design, motor and battery integration, housing and grip design, and internal component layout. This project represents a new design variation with improved packaging and performance. I delivered full 3D CAD assemblies, exploded views, detailed manufacturing drawings, and assembly documentation, making the product ready for prototyping and production.
Challenge:
The primary challenge was converting a conceptual idea into a manufacturable, handheld product. The device required:
- Compact packaging of motor, battery, and transmission mechanism
- Maintaining ergonomic comfort for prolonged handheld use
- Ensuring durability despite continuous vibration and motion
- Proper weight distribution for user control and stability
- Designing a housing that is both manufacturable and serviceable
Additionally, the internal space was limited, which made component placement, wiring paths, and heat management complex.
Solutions:
To address these challenges, I developed a complete mechanical system and enclosure from scratch.
- Designed an efficient internal mechanism suitable for handheld operation
- Integrated motor and battery within a compact and balanced layout
- Created an ergonomic grip and outer housing for comfortable handling
- Optimized internal component positioning for serviceability and assembly
- Produced detailed SolidWorks CAD models and assemblies
- Generated exploded views and technical drawings for manufacturing and assembly
The design prioritized ease of manufacturing, assembly efficiency, and long-term reliability.
Results:
- Successfully converted the concept into a production-ready product design
- Achieved improved internal packaging and structural stability
- Delivered complete technical documentation for prototyping and manufacturing
- Enabled smooth communication between design and manufacturing teams
- Reduced potential assembly errors through clear assembly documentation
The final outcome was a fully engineered handheld machine design prepared for prototyping and scalable production.
