Project Overview:
My Role: Mechanical Design Engineer | Trailer & Chassis Design
Designed and engineered custom truck bodies including dump bodies, dumpsters, and grapple bodies based on load volume and client-specific requirements. Developed optimized under-structures using C-channels and rectangular tubes to ensure strength, durability, and weight efficiency. Delivered complete 3D models, detailed manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and inspection drawings. All designs were successfully fabricated and assembled to meet production and field-use requirements.
Challenge:
The project involved designing large structural assemblies where both strength and weight were critical.
Key challenges included:
- Designing structures capable of handling heavy loads and impact forces
- Maintaining weight efficiency to avoid overloading the truck chassis
- Customizing dimensions for different client requirements and applications
- Ensuring manufacturability using available fabrication processes
- Preventing structural deformation during lifting, dumping, and grappling operations
- Providing clear fabrication drawings for workshop execution
Each body type (dump, dumpster, and grapple) had different load behavior and stress conditions, requiring careful structural planning.
Solutions:
To solve these problems, I engineered optimized structural frameworks and manufacturing-friendly designs.
- Designed reinforced under-structures using C-channels and rectangular tubes
- Optimized material thickness and member placement for strength-to-weight balance
- Developed complete 3D SolidWorks assemblies for each truck body type
- Created accurate manufacturing and inspection drawings
- Prepared detailed BOMs for material planning and procurement
- Ensured designs aligned with fabrication capabilities and welding processes
The designs focused on durability, serviceability, and production efficiency.
Results:
- All designs were successfully fabricated and assembled
- Structures performed reliably under field operating conditions
- Achieved strong yet weight-efficient truck body construction
- Reduced fabrication confusion through precise drawings and inspection documentation
