Automatic Breading Machine –
Food Processing Equipment Design
Project Overview:
My Role: Mechanical Design Engineer | Food Processing Machinery
Designed and developed a food processing breading machine from scratch for consistent coating and hygienic operation. Engineered the hopper, breading distribution system, roller assembly, adjustable guides, and support frame based on production capacity. Created complete 3D models, fabrication drawings, BOM, and inspection drawings. The machine was successfully fabricated and assembled, meeting food-grade design and operational requirements.
Challenge:
The project required designing a reliable automation machine that could operate continuously in a food production environment.
Key challenges included:
- Synchronizing conveyor motion with the stamping mechanism
- Maintaining consistent stamping position and pressure on soft dough
- Designing hygienic and cleanable machine components
- Ensuring safe operation for workers in a production setting
- Selecting suitable motors and pneumatic components for repetitive cycles
- Achieving smooth material flow without damaging the product
Precise timing between conveyor movement and stamping action was the most critical engineering problem.
Solutions:
I developed a fully integrated mechanical and pneumatic system to ensure accurate and repeatable operation.
- Designed a custom conveyor with controlled speed and alignment
- Integrated a pneumatic stamping mechanism synchronized with conveyor movement
- Selected appropriate motors, actuators, valves, and pneumatic components
- Optimized mechanical linkages for repeatable stamping accuracy
- Created detailed SolidWorks 3D assemblies and part models
- Delivered manufacturing drawings and a complete BOM for fabrication and procurement
The design emphasized repeatability, hygiene, and production efficiency.
Results:
- Successfully automated the manual dough stamping process
- Achieved consistent stamping quality and production speed
- Machine was fabricated, assembled, and commissioned on-site
- Improved production efficiency and reduced manual labor
- Provided complete documentation enabling maintenance and future replication
The final system was a fully operational production machine, ready for continuous industrial use.
